IndiaNewsonWeb: 04 Aug, 2017, In the Rajya Sabha, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) became largest party of the upper house leaving the congress seats behind in the matter. Now, in the Upper House, there are 58 members of the BJP, while the main Opposition party has only 57 MPs.

After the by-election in Madhya Pradesh, BJP MP from the Rajya Sabha Samitya Uike took oath on Thursday. After the death of Union Minister Anil Madhav Dave, elections were required on this seat. Uike's election became uncontested This is the first time after the Narendra Modi government came to power in May 2014 when the saffron party has the highest MP in the Rajya Sabha. The BJP-led NDA, though still has a decisive majority in the upper house, but with the JDU, its strength has definitely increased. In order to reach the majority figures, the BJP will have to wait till 2018, when there will be elections for Rajya Sabha seats in many states including the UP.

The next Tuesday is the election for 9 seats. Of these, 6 seats are from West Bengal and 3 seats are from Gujarat, but this will not make any difference to the BJP's rise. BJP has already prepared to win two seats in Gujarat. The BJP is also pushing for the third seat by stopping Ahmed Patel of Congress. In West Bengal the term of two members of Congress is ending, but the party is looking at a seat winning only one seat here. At the same time, Trinamool Congress's Mamta Banerjee has completed preparations for sending her five leaders to the Rajya Sabha.

Congress went reduce the number of its members this year after the death of two of its members but remains as the single largest party in the upper house by 2018. Union Minister Anil Madhav Dave passed away in May this year.
